Video: When Queen Elizabeth II visited Sacramento
In 1983, Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip visited Sacramento for four hours, taking in Sutter’s Fort and the state Capitol, as part of their California tour.
The queen—Britain’s longest-reigning monarch—died Thursday after 70 years on the throne. She was 96.
Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, died in April 2021 at age 99.
The royal couple arrived on Air Force II at Sacramento Metropolitan Airport at 10:56 a.m. on March 4, 1983, according to The Bee’s published account.
Elizabeth II and the duke’s first stop was Sutter’s Fort, where historical reenactors greeted them in Gold Rush garb.
A reported crowd of 5,000, including a red carpet with 140 school children, greeted the couple when they reached the Capitol.
