Longtime Sacramento Bee journalist and Opinion Editor Marcos Bretón will be honored Thursday by the Sacramento Hispanic Chamber of Commerce in its inaugural Luces Hispanas Awards.

Bretón, who joined The Bee in 1989 as a news reporter, became a columnist in 2007 and was named The McClatchy’s Co.’s California opinion editor last year, is being recognized with the Luz de Valor award.

The award is given to an “inspiring and ceiling-breaking individual or entity that displayed tenacity against significant odds.”

The new Luces Hispanas Awards come as the Sacramento Hispanic Chamber of Commerce celebrates its 50th anniversary. The gala will be held 5:30 p.m. at Golden 1 Center in downtown Sacramento.

Other recipients Thursday include the Casa de Español Center for Language and Culture, which earned the Luz de Comunidad award; Armando Salud-Ambriz, the deputy of elections for Yolo County, who is being honored with the Luz de Esperanza Award; and Eva Garcia, owner of Sacramento-based Garcia Realty, recipient of the Luz de Vida award.
