Tom Morello of Rage Against The Machine to perform free Sacramento concert for UFW bill

Tom Morello, virtuoso guitarist of the band Rage Against The Machine, will perform at a free concert Wednesday afternoon on the Capitol Grounds in downtown Sacramento to support the United Farm Workers.

Morello, an activist also known for his time with rock bands Audioslave and Prophets of Rage, announced the concert Tuesday on his verified Twitter account.

“24th Day UFW Support Concert with Tom Morello” is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m. Wednesday on the west side of the Capitol Grounds, according to an approved permit provided the California Highway Patrol. The permit indicates that 2,000 people are expected at the event.

“On this 24th day of the Farmworker Vigil we celebrate the effort and sacrifice of marchers who walked from Delano to Sacramento. Tom Morello will have a concert honoring these farm workers in support of AB2183,” according to the details listed on the permit.

Assembly Bill 2183, sponsored by the United Farm Workers and authored by Assemblyman Mark Stone, D-Monterey Bay, passed in the final days of the legislative session.

California Gov. Gavin Newsom has until Sept. 30 to sign or veto the bill. Newsom has signaled he may veto AB 2183 and has not taken a public stance on the measure since lawmakers approved it.

Over Labor Day weekend, President Joe Biden issued a statement backing AB 2183 that would allow farmworkers to vote by mail in union elections. Supporters say the measure would make it easier and less intimidating for them to organize.
