A man was killed and two other people were injured in an apartment fire Wednesday morning in Sacramento’s North City Farms neighborhood, authorities said.

The fire broke out around 3 a.m. in the 2900 block of 16th Avenue, with “heavy fire” engulfing the top floor of a 10-unit apartment building, the Sacramento Fire Department said in tweets.

A man found inside a unit on the second floor of the building was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead a short time later, the Fire Department said.

Two other patients were taken to hospitals with “less critical injuries,” Fire Department officials said.

The apartment fire has been extinguished, and its cause remains under investigation.

The deceased victim’s identity will be released by the Sacramento County Coroner’s Office pending notification of family.
