Two Sacramento officers wound wanted man in shooting at Elk Grove apartment complex
Two Sacramento police officers opened fire on a wanted suspect, wounding him, Tuesday afternoon in Elk Grove.
The incident occurred in the 6800 block of Di Lusso Drive “involving Sacramento PD officers,” the department said in a post to Twitter. The shooting occurred in the city limits of Elk Grove, and Sacramento officers said that Elk Grove is assisting in the investigation, though they were not involved.
Sacramento police officials said in a news release that 32-year-old Terry Sharp was wanted on a felony fraud warrant out of Orange County and was also a person of interest in an active assault investigation in Sacramento.
Sacramento police said officers tracked Sharp’s car to an apartment building and saw that he was “manipulating a firearm that he was holding.” Detectives told Sharp to drop the gun multiple times but he refused their commands and an officer-involved shooting occurred, according to a police news release.
Police said officers rendered emergency aid before medical personnel transported the man to an area hospital in serious condition. Sharp remains in police custody at the hospital while he receives medical treatment, according to the news release.
A large police presence, from both Sacramento and Elk Grove agencies, was seen outside the Bella Vista at Elk Grove Apartments, a 241-unit complex built in 2000. The entrance to the complex and the parking lot across the street at Laguna Community Park are blocked off by police vehicles.
Victoria Rodriguez got a phone call from her husband, Oscar Tellez, just after noon to stay out at her office downtown.
“He said he heard gunshots and saw a guy lying on the ground,” she said just after 1:30 p.m. outside the complex as residents waited behind crime tape to return to their homes. “We’ve been living here for more than a year. Nothing like this has happened since we’ve been here.”
Police presence continued to grow some two hours after Tellez heard those gunshots. Plainclothes detectives crossed crime tape to enter the scene while across Di Lusso, a large Elk Grove police mobile command center was set up at the park.
Police began briefing reports at 2:30 p.m.
Maurice Jones headed out for an errand just before noon just as police sped past him. Ninety minutes later his apartment complex was blocked off by crime tape, police swarmed at the entrance.
“Never, never thought something would happen in our complex,” Jones said. “It’s a shame. It’s a shame.”
Elk Grove police are leading the shooting investigation. Sacramento County District Attorney’s Office and the Office of Inspector General will provide an independent review as well.
