Driver killed, passenger hospitalized after crash on I-5 in Sacramento’s Natomas area

A man was killed and a woman hospitalized after a vehicle crashed into an attenuator barrier Friday morning on Interstate 5 in Sacramento’s Natomas area, authorities said.

The crash happened shortly before 6 a.m. on northbound I-5 near Interstate 80, California Highway Patrol North Sacramento spokesman Officer Justin Fetterly said.

The driver was pronounced dead at the scene by Sacramento Fire Department personnel, Fetterly said. He was identified later by the Sacramento County Coroner’s Office as 26-year-old Edwin Kristofer Medina Padilla of Sacramento,

The passenger, a woman in her early 20s, was taken to a hospital. The extent of her injuries was unknown, Fetterly said.

The crash remains under investigation.
