Bakersfield man, 21, killed in two-vehicle crash on Interstate 5 in Sacramento County

Roadway fatality

One driver was killed and another seriously injured in a two-vehicle crash early Tuesday morning on Interstate 5 in south Sacramento County, according to the California Highway Patrol.

A 2014 Nissan heading north on I-5 near Hood Franklin Road shortly before 1 a.m. veered to the left, traveled over the center median and into oncoming traffic at an unknown speed, the CHP’s South Sacramento office said in a news release.

The Nissan was then struck by a GMC truck occupied by three people traveling on southbound I-5, CHP officials said. The GMC was traveling about 70 mph.

The Nissan spun out following the collision. The driver, despite wearing a seat belt, was ejected from the vehicle into a nearby field, according to the news release. He suffered fatal injuries in the crash.

The Sacramento County Coroner’s Office identified the deceased victim as Sixto Cervantes, 21, of Bakersfield.

The GMC driver, described in the CHP collision report as a 38-year-old Lodi man, suffered major injuries.

No injuries to the GMC passengers were reported. Cervantes was the lone occupant of the Nissan.

The crash remains under investigation, according to the CHP.
