See moment Rocklin mother stands for first time in years to dance at son’s wedding
A Rocklin, California, mother in a wheelchair surprised her son with a dance on his wedding day by standing for the first time in four years — leaving not a dry eye in the reception hall.
Dede Brown, 58, kept her mobility a secret for two weeks, leading up to the emotional moment as she stood up on the dance floor, a video posted Nov. 3, 2022 shows.
She has been in a wheelchair for the past four years because of a degenerative nerve disease that left her unable to walk more than a few steps, according to SWNS, which provides video content for media outlets.
Dede’s son Tayler said he wanted to dance with his mother, but she tole him he should ask a different family member since she could not stand alone. Tayler, 26, was insistent, according to SWNS. He planned to hold her with the help of her husband, Mark, during the dance.
Dede Brown saw a solution in an Instagram post advertising The Zeen, a mobility device fitted with three levels, sitting, barstool mode and standing. The Zeen uses a bicycle seat design to let the user walk and move, SWNS said.
The device arrived two weeks before the wedding, and she practiced using it in secret.
“I was really nervous,” she said in a comment to SWNS. “I had Mark demonstrate several times. I knew I wouldn’t fall because Mark did the Superman in it. As soon as my son would leave the house I would get up and dance to practice.”
Two weeks later the moment came. The video shows wedding guests wiping their eyes with tissue during the dance.
“I stayed in my room half the day so I knew I’d have the energy to do the dance.” Dede Brown said. “I was just so excited and thrilled that I was able to do this on my own. I never thought it would come to this.”
