Daylight saving time ends Sunday. What time will the sun set in Sacramento?
This weekend we gain a glorious hour of sleep.
Nov. 6 is the end of daylight saving time, and at 2 a.m., we will fall back an hour.
Though an extra hour of sleep is always nice, we also lose a significant amount of sunlight making the days seem shorter into the winter season.
How much sunlight do we lose on Sunday?
With the sun setting an hour earlier on Nov. 6, we are expected to have a total of 10 hours and 22 minutes of sunlight on Sunday, according to Time and Date. Which totals more than two hours of lost sunlight since the start of the Fall Equinox on Sept. 22.
The days in Sacramento are going to be shorter and colder, with temperatures already dipping into the late 30s during the early parts of the day.
You can expect sunrise to be roughly around 6:38 a.m. and sunset to be at around 5 p.m. after daylight saving ends. By the end of the month, the sun will set around 4:45 p.m.
Preparing for daylight saving time
Daylight saving time in the fall is much easier to adjust to than in the spring.
The extra hour of sleep makes everyone feel rested, while in the spring people have the opposite effect and feel tired.
Losing and gaining one hour of sleep doesn’t seem significant in the grand scheme of things; however, according to the Sleep Foundation, that one hour can cause mood disturbances. For example, the end of daylight savings in November doesn’t necessarily disrupt sleep, “but sleep-deprived people falsely assume the extra hour will reduce sleep debt when long-term sleep adjustments are usually needed instead” the Sleep Foundation writes.
Which is why it’s suggested to prepare for both the start and end of daylight saving time. Below are some tips from the Sleep Foundation, a media company that publishes research on sleep and health, to prepare for this weekend:
- Sleep at you usual bedtime before the fall back occurs
- Adjust your clocks before you go to bed
- Set your alarms at your normal wake-up time
Didn’t California get rid of daylight saving time?
There have been discussions about California moving to permanent standard time. Proposition 7, also known as the Legislative Power to Change Daylight Saving Time Measure, was introduced in the 2018 ballot and won by 59.75%. However, the state legislature is still working to get it through the federal government.
In March, the Senate voted to stop daylight saving time through the Sunshine Protection Act. The bill passed with an amendment by unanimous consent. However, the bill is now stalled in the house.
Currently, all states but Hawaii and parts of Arizona participate in DST.
Dangers of driving while drowsy
Though we will be gaining an hour of sleep this weekend, the disruption in sleep can cause danger on the road.
Which is why, the National Sleep Foundation’s annual Drowsy Prevention Week campaign promotes awareness on the risks of driving sleepy. From Nov. 6 to the 13 the campaign advocates for drivers to “sleep first and drive alert.”
An estimated 37 million drivers drove sleepy at least once every year, according to the National Sleep Foundation annual survey.
The national non-profit urges people to be aware of the effects of shortened days and lack of sleep.
