Metro Fire crews tackle fire at Florin and Excelsior roads in southeast Sacramento County
Sacramento Metropolitan Fire District crews quickly handled a windswept grass fire burning Sunday in southeastern Sacramento County after calling in more resources to tackle the blaze.
No injuries were reported.
The blaze, which burned about 90 acres, sparked near Florin and Excelsior roads just after 11 a.m. and had jumped Florin Road just before noon, according to radio traffic from the scene. Winds fed the blaze burning in grass and brush near 10890 Florin Road, Sacramento Metro Fire officials posted in an update to its social media accounts.
Metro Fire crews were able to gain the advantage of the fire that burned east Matsuda’s nursery in the Gene W. Andal Park area.
A brush crew, helicopter, bulldozer and an additional six engines were dispatched, according to Metro Fire officials. Firefighters are now beginning to mop up the blaze with other units heading back to their stations, said officials.
Metro Fire said in a social media post that flames were “wind driven” in grasses and brush. “Additional resources ordered,” they said.
Smoke from the fire was visible to the west along Highway 99 in south Sacramento, as well as to the north near Mather Airport.
