More than 1,300 without power in Nevada City, closing schools; PG&E responding
Much of Nevada City lost power Tuesday evening, with a widespread outage lasting into Wednesday morning and forcing local schools to cancel classes.
A “majority” of the Northern California city was affected by the outage, the Nevada City Police Department said in a social media post just before 7 a.m.
Outages may have been caused by a tree falling into power lines near Highway 193 and Fowler Road, Cal Fire’s Nevada-Yuba-Placer unit said in a post minutes later.
Pacific Gas and Electric Co. on its online outage map showed 1,303 homes and businesses without power in an unplanned outage as of 9:30 a.m. More than 1,000 were still without power at 2 p.m. Wednesday.
The map indicated some parts of Nevada City, home to roughly 3,200 people, had been without power since about 7:15 p.m. Tuesday.
Nevada City School District announced on its website that its two campuses, Deer Creek Elementary School and Seven Hills Middle School, are closed Wednesday due to lack of power.
Outages had also been reported earlier in the morning in nearby Grass Valley, but PG&E reported power restored there as of 9 a.m.
PG&E in a statement Tuesday said crews were preparing for numerous outages caused by a strong winter storm hitting Northern California this week, which could bring feet of snow to parts of the Sierra Nevada mountains and a few inches to some parts of the foothills.
Social media users reported snow falling Tuesday evening in some parts of Nevada City.
It was 36 degrees in Nevada City as of 9:30 am., according to the National Weather Service.
