Toddler killed, woman seriously in I-80 crash between Citrus Heights and Roseville, CHP says
A toddler was killed and a woman seriously inured in a two-vehicle crash Wednesday morning on Interstate 80 between Citrus Heights and Roseville, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The crash happened after a Volkswagen sedan with a mechanical issue stopped in a gore point between lanes of eastbound I-80 and the Riverside Avenue on-ramp to the highway, the CHP’s Auburn area office said in a Thursday news release.
The Volkswagen had been stopped in the gore point for several minutes, its driver waiting for a tow truck, when a Ram pickup truck entering I-80 from the on-ramp veered left, crashing into the rear of the Volkswagen, according to the news release.
A boy younger than 2 years old who was secured in a car seat in the back seat of the Volkswagen suffered major injuries and died at a hospital, CHP officials wrote.
Both drivers were also taken to a hospital. The Volkswagen driver, a 29-year-old woman, had major injuries. The Ram driver, a 40-year-old man, had moderate injuries. All three victims were Citrus Heights residents, according to the CHP collision report.
Alcohol and drugs are not suspected as factors in the crash, which remains under investigation, the CHP said. No arrests have been made.
The deceased victim’s identity will be released by the Sacramento County Coroner’s Office pending notification of family.
The crash closed the right two lanes of eastbound I-80 traffic and the Riverside Avenue ramp for more than two hours Wednesday morning, stalling morning commute traffic, as officers investigated.
