Pedestrian killed, hit by two vehicles while crossing Highway 50 in Sacramento, CHP says

Pedestrian fatality

A pedestrian was killed Thursday evening, struck by two vehicles while attempting to cross Highway 50 near Sacramento’s Newton Booth area, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The incident happened around 6:45 p.m. on westbound Highway 50 near the 26th Street exit, according to a news release from the CHP’s South Sacramento office.

The pedestrian, described in the news release as a “John Doe” of unknown age, was attempting to run from the center median to the right-hand side of traffic when he was struck by a Toyota in the No. 2 lane of traffic, according to the CHP.

The man was “ejected” from the roadway by the Toyota, then struck with a “glancing blow” by a Honda in the No. 3 lane, CHP officials wrote. Both vehicles were reportedly traveling at about 65 mph.

The pedestrian and the Toyota ended up in the far right lane of westbound traffic, while the Honda driver exited the highway at 26th Street. Both drivers waited for CHP officers, who arrived at the scene minutes later, according to the news release.

Sacramento Metropolitan Fire District personnel pronounced the pedestrian dead at the scene. His identity will be released by the Sacramento County Coroner’s Office pending notification of family.

The CHP said alcohol and drugs do not appear to be factors in the crash. Neither involved driver was arrested.
