Newly elected Sacramento City Council members Caity Maple, Lisa Kaplan and Karina Talamantes took the oath of office during Tuesday’s meeting.
“Ladies and gentleman, we have just seated a majority-women city council,” announced Mayor Darrell Steinberg.
It’s only the second time in Sacramento’s history to have a majority-female council. The last time was 1992.
Returning member Rick Jennings was also sworn in at the meeting.
Friends, family members and supporters filled the council chambers, including Elk Grove Mayor Bobbie Singh-Allen and West Sacramento Mayor Martha Guerrero. Former City Councilwoman Angelique Ashby, recently elected to the state Senate, was there to offer support and read the oath for Karina Talamantes, Ashby’s former chief of staff.
“Progress is possible and it’s demonstrated here tonight,” Steinberg said.
