One person is in critical condition after an early Christmas morning house fire in North Highlands, according to the Sacramento Metropolitan Fire Department.

Firefighters responded about 2 a.m. Sunday to “heavy fire conditions” at the home north of Sacramento, the department announced via social media.

The fire stemmed from an artificial, electric Christmas tree, Capt. Parker Wilbourn told The Sacramento Bee.

The house was on David Drive, a short residential street in North Highlands’ North Haven neighborhood, Wilbourn said.

Firefighters took one person to the hospital in critical condition, one of six adults displaced in the fire. There was no update on that victim’s status as of mid-Sunday morning, Wilbourn said. Two dogs also died.

The American Red Cross is assisting those displaced.
