Fair weather today, Tuesday
Going to the State Fair? Today and Tuesday look good for walking the black top of the midway or lollygagging in the barns among the farm animals. That’s because the temperature is only expected to top out at 91 degrees both days. Thursday may not be the day for late-afternoon outside fair-going. The high that day: a predicted 100 degrees.
Special Olympics kickoff
This summer, Los Angeles will host the 2015 Special Olympics World Games, and the organizing committee is gearing up with Monday’s Summer World Games Final Leg Kickoff Ceremony on the west side of the Capitol. Speakers include Gov. Jerry Brown, state Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation Secretary Jeffrey Beard and Lt. Gov. Gavin Newsom. One hundred law enforcement officers and 10 athletes will also attend. The opening ceremony is at 9:30 a.m.
Closing arguments in murder trial
Closing arguments are expected Monday in the murder trial of Eric Minjares, 20; Gabriel Quintero, 23; and Marcus Weber, 19, before Sacramento Superior Court Judge Eugene Balonon. The men are accused in the fatal shooting of 3-year-old Jorge Azios III on July 4, 2012, as he slept in the back of the SUV his father was driving. /
State Fair honors youth leaders
It’s Youth Leadership Day at the State Fair, running from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. (carnival closes at 11 p.m.) at Cal Expo, 1600 Exposition Blvd. Highlights include the Sale of Champions at 6 p.m. and the musical group MKTO at 8 p.m. Go to sacbee.com/state-fair for more details.
