‘We could have died’: Driver shares new video of her Tesla catching fire on Highway 50
A brother and sister told a local news station that they barely made it out of their Tesla Model S without injury before the car burst into flames Jan. 28.
Sunit Mayall was behind the wheel of the Tesla on eastbound Highway 50 near the Sunrise Avenue exit when she and her brother Dilpreet Mayall heard popping sounds, according to KCRA.
Sunit shared with the news station a video of the moments after she and Dilpreet fled from the car. It shows the Tesla bursting into flames seconds later.
“We could have died in that moment,” Sunit told KCRA. “I was really scared. I was panicking a lot and just re-living it. I’m getting emotional right now. But it was really scary.”
Video aggregator VideoElephant shared a clip of the interview and the fire from San Francisco Fox affiliate KTVU.
The car is shared by the family, who is from Sacramento County, KCRA reported.
Sacramento Metropolitan Fire District crews used 6,000 gallons of water to extinguish the flames from the electric vehicle.
While fire officials said the fire started in battery compartment, the siblings said they don’t know how it happened. The car was recently serviced and no warning lights were on.
