Butte County man, 58, dies after dump truck crashes on I-80 embankment near Auburn
A Butte County man was found dead Friday afternoon after the dump truck he was driving rolled down an embankment along Interstate 80 near Auburn.
California Highway Patrol officers were called to the wreck just before 4 p.m.
Emergency crews found the 58-year-old from Forbestown unresponsive behind the wheel of his Peterbilt truck in a dirt field north of westbound I-80 and the southbound Highway 49 on-ramp to the interstate.
Placer County coroner’s officials had not released his name Saturday, pending notification of family, CHP officials said in a news release.
Witnesses told patrol officers the truck went from westbound I-80 across the island of the Highway 49 on- and off-ramps, through a guard rail and down the embankment. The truck slammed into a tree and came to rest in the field, the CHP said.
Paramedics tried to resuscitate the man but were unable to revive him, CHP officials said. Neither alcohol nor drugs were believed to have factored in the crash, which remains under investigation.
