1 killed, 4 hurt after SUVs collide in overnight crash at south Sacramento intersection

One person was killed and four other people were hospitalized following a crash at a south Sacramento intersection Saturday morning.

According to the Sacramento Metropolitan Fire District, crews were called to the intersection of Stockton Boulevard and Florin Road at 3:36 a.m. for a two-vehicle crash.

Witnesses told the California Highway Patrol that a 2007 Hyundai Santa Fe was traveling west on Florin Road when it struck a 1994 Nissan Pathfinder that had ignored the right of way as it approached Florin Road from Fawn Lane and traveled across several lanes to enter a parking lot.

“Without obeying the Hyundai’s right-of-way, (the Pathfinder) moved into the direct path and a crash occurred between both vehicles,” CHP South Sacramento spokesman Officer Mark Leavitt said. “The momentum carried them over the sidewalk and to the right.”

The driver of the Pathfinder died at the scene, according to Metro Fire officials. He will be identified by the Sacramento County Coroner’s Office, authorities said. Firefighters said four were taken to hospitals “with varying degrees of injuries,” Metro Fire said in a social media post.

Leavitt said both vehicles had passengers, “however, it is still being determined what seating positions were the occupants in at the time of the crash.”

While the crash remains under investigation, Leavitt said alcohol was considered a factor in the collision.
