Victim in fatal in downtown Sacramento car-pedestrian crash identified

Pedestrian fatality

A Rocklin man died after being hit by a vehicle Tuesday afternoon while walking in downtown Sacramento, police said, closing some roadways and intersections as detectives investigated.

The pedestrian was struck near Eighth and P streets just after 1:40 p.m., Sacramento Police Department spokeswoman Officer Krista Koppinger said. The pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene, she said.

The driver remained at the scene, according to Koppinger.

The Sacramento County Coroner’s Office on Wednesday identified the victim as 50-year-old Shanmugan Pirabarooban, of Rocklin.

P Street was closed between Seventh and 10th streets, and Eighth Street closed between O and Q streets, the Police Department said in tweets just after 2:30 p.m. All roadways reopened shortly before 5:30 p.m. Tuesday.
