When is Sacramento Big Day of Giving? Here’s how to donate to the regional fundraiser
The 11th annual Big Day of Giving kicks off next week, when you can donate to non-profits throughout the Sacramento region. Early contributions have already started online.
Since 2013, the Sacramento Region Community Foundation event has raised $78 million for more than 700 area non-profits throughout El Dorado, Placer, Sacramento and Yolo counties. There are 762 total nonprofits are participating in 2023.
More than 30,000 donors set a record last year with $13.4 million raised in the 24-hour fundraiser. This year, the foundation hopes to “raise the profile of philanthropy in the Sacramento region,” said Vasey Coman, a spokesperson for the foundation, in an email to The Bee.
When is the Big Day of Giving?
Why just one “big day?” Coman said “we harness the limited time period to make giving exciting!”
Donations will run on May 4 from midnight to 11:59 p.m., but you can schedule your donations online now.
What’s new?
The foundation has launched a new feature in a push to correct a disparity Coman said is a national trend. Now, donors can search for organizations led by people of color and direct their funds accordingly.
“The Sacramento region is noted for its racial diversity, but local fundraising trends reflect what we know is true across the nation: Organizations led by people of color typically receive less funding than nonprofits with white leaders, despite positive outcomes and strong relationships in the communities they serve,” Coman said.
How do I donate?
You can start scheduling donations now on the Big Day of Giving website, or wait to take place in the festivities next week.
All donations must be at least over $15. Payments can be made with most major credit cards including Visa, MasterCard, Discover and American Express.
You can also dedicate your donation or attach a message to your contribution.
Who can I donate to?
On the Big Day of giving search page you’ll have the option to choose to donate to either organizations, fundraisers, events or teams. There will also be a drop down where you can search to donate by the mission categories of each organization participating.

“On Big Day of Giving, philanthropy will take center stage throughout our region, as caring people unite to make a positive difference and once again raise millions of dollars for local causes,” said Kerry Wood, chief executive officer of the Sacramento Region Community Foundation, in a news release.
Nonprofits throughout the Sacramento region will be hosting events leading up to the Big Day. You can see a full list of events on the Big Day of Giving website.
