Rain returns to Sacramento forecast — with snow in the mountains. How fast will temps drop?

Contrasting weather conditions are expected over the next couple of days throughout the Sacramento region — with a slight chance of rain — as temperatures fluctuate rapidly in Northern California.

Near-record heat is expected Friday into Saturday with highs in the low 90s. Weather conditions begin to shift as wind picks up Sunday, dropping temperatures back to the 80s. Higher-elevation snow is forecast to start Monday and rain may follow in the capital city as temperatures drop to the high 60s, according to the National Weather Service.

Sacramento region forecast

Friday and Saturday will reach above 90 degrees in the Sacramento area, according to the National Weather service forecast. Valley high temperatures will bring moderate heat risk to the area.

“Right now we do have a high pressure overhead and that is what’s producing these above normal temperatures,” said Scott Rowe, a weather service meteorologist.

Sunday temperatures will start to dip into the 80s. Wind gusts between 20 to 30 miles per hour are predicted and will be strongest over the Delta and mountains, the weather service wrote in a tweet Thursday.

Rain back in the forecast

Monday high temperatures will dip down to the 60s with lows in the upper 40s. The weather service is predicting foothill rain and mountain snow during the afternoon and evening hours.

There is a chance of light rain in Sacramento, with predictions upwards of a 10th of an inch, Rowe said.

“Chances are going to be on and off through much of Tuesday, Wednesday and possibly Thursday,” Rowe said. “If someone were to forget their umbrella any one of those days will likely be ok.”

Isolated showers will also continue Tuesday and Wednesday through the foothills. Snow fall for mountain level between 5,500 to 6,500 feet is predicted.

If you plan to travel up the mountain, expect travel delays and a possibility of chain controls.
