One person died after a fiery crash Wednesday night on Highway 50 near Placerville, fire officials said.

A compact coupe was found “fully engulfed” after a single-vehicle crash on eastbound Highway 50 near Newtown Road just before midnight, the El Dorado County Fire Protection District said in a social media post Thursday morning.

Firefighters after extinguishing the car fire found a deceased occupant inside, the fire district said. The victim’s age and gender were unknown.

The California Highway Patrol’s Placerville office is investigating the fatal crash, and the coroner’s unit of the El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office is working to identify the victim, fire officials said.
