Video: What Rocklin High students at school rally say about alleged sex-video incident
Students at Rocklin High School staged a rally and walkout in front of their Placer County campus Wednesday morning to support those who have reported instances of being bullied on campus.
The walk-out comes a week after a Rocklin sophomore varsity softball player emotionally spoke at the Rocklin Unified School Board meeting about her experiences. She said a football player at Rocklin used his cellphone to record a consensual sex act and posted it to social media and direct messages to scores of other students. The student said she was a victim of bullying following the video’s dissemination.
“It means a lot that attention is being brought to this, especially because the football team and baseball team have been praised by and funded heavily by the school for so long,” said Laney Maeyama, a senior. “And it just means a lot that girls are coming together and making a change and trying to make their voices heard. It’s really powerful.
“I’ve known people who have gone through this for years,” she continued as car horns honked in support of the protest. “This is not just a one-time thing. That’s why I think this is so important. ... It’s the one time that it got attention brought to it. I know so many people, including myself, who have been begged for unsolicited pictures, and videos spread around about them and just being flat-out bullied by these people and nobody has done anything about it. The district should take action and actually make our girls feel safe.”
