Near-average weather day forecast

Temperatures in Sacramento should be just around normal for mid-July, according to the National Weather Service. The high should be about 95 degrees, one degree higher than the average of 94 for July 18. The record high for the date was 112 degrees set in 1988.

Eppie’s Great Race launches at William Pond Recreation Area

The 42nd annual Eppie’s Great Race, known as “The World’s Oldest Triathlon,” is an area summertime tradition for everyone from elite athletes to families. The race, which begins at 8 a.m. at the William Pond Recreation Area, features a 5.82-mile run, a 12.5-mile bike and a 6.35-mile paddle along the American River Parkway in Rancho Cordova and Sacramento. Sacramento-area restaurateur/entrepreneur Eppie Johnson founded the event in 1974.

Brews take center stage at California State Fair

The Best of California Brewfest at 2 p.m. highlights events at the California State Fair, 1600 Exposition Blvd. Other attractions include the 20th annual Gospel Fest, AQHA Horse Show, horse racing beginning at 1:15 p.m. and Queen Nation in concert at 8 p.m. See sacbee.com/state-fair for more details.

Attention, Folsom Boulevard motorists

The Sacramento Police Department will conduct a sobriety and driver’s license checkpoint near California State University, Sacramento. Beginning at 7:30 p.m. and continuing for five to seven hours, motorists traveling Folsom Boulevard near Hornet Drive will be stopped by officers looking for signs of alcohol or drug impairment. They also will check to make sure that drivers are properly licensed.

Family History Day at downtown museum

Family History Day, sponsored by The California Endowment in conjunction with the new exhibit, We Are All Californians, takes place at the California Museum. The event is from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 1020 O St., Sacramento. Festivities include free admission to all exhibits, free parking, hands-on activities for children and demonstrations by participating genealogy experts.

  • The Sacramento Solar Cooking Festival heats up from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at William Land Park, 4398 Freeport Blvd. in Sacramento. The scheduled special guest at the event, sponsored by Solar Cookers International, is Ahmed Hassan from DIY Network’s “Yard Crashers.”
  • SactoMoFo’s Food Truck Mania returns to Elk Grove from 5 to 8 p.m. at Morse Park, 5540 Bellaterra Drive.

Local sports

  • Pro soccer friendly: Sacramento Republic FC vs. Newcastle United FC, 7 p.m., Bonney Field.
  • Pro tennis: California Dream vs. Boston Lobsters, 7:30 p.m., Dream Stadium at Sunrise Mall in the Sunrise MarketPlace.
