Sacramento woman dies after she’s hit by car while running across Gerber Road, CHP says

Pedestrian fatality

A 39-year-old woman died late Friday after she ran across a southeast Sacramento County road into the path of a car that struck her, the California Highway Patrol reported.

Melina Griset Alvarez of Sacramento was the pedestrian who died in Friday night’s incident on Gerber Road, just east of Waterman Road, according to the Sacramento County Coroner’s Office.

The incident was reported about 10:30 p.m. A 29-year-old Sacramento man was heading east in a white 2019 Prius. As the car went through the Waterman Road intersection with a solid green light, Alvarez ran directly in front of the Prius, the CHP South Sacramento office announced Monday in a news release.

The CHP said the car’s front end struck the pedestrian, who was thrown about 20 feet in an easterly direction before her body came to rest in an embankment about 3 feet off the road. The driver remained at the scene until CHP officers arrived and spoke to him.

The driver of Tesla vehicle also heading east on Gerber captured the incident on video showing the pedestrian running south across the westbound lanes, over the median and into the eastbound lane where she was hit by the Prius, the CHP said.

Investigators determined that alcohol or drugs were not a factor in this fatal collision.
