3 killed in last week’s crash on San Juan Road are identified by Sacramento coroner

A woman and two children who died last week when a car carrying 11 people crashed into a tree in Sacramento’s Northgate neighborhood have been identified by the coroner. Another woman and seven other children suffered serious injuries.

Sacramento County Coroner Rosa Vega on Monday named the victims as Rayshawna Armstrong, 25; Zayden Mangram, 3; and Alexander Leon, 5. Armstrong and Zayden were Sacramento residents, Vega said.

A sedan occupied by two women and nine children, ages 3 through 8, struck a tree near the 900 block of San Juan Road around 8:15 p.m. Wednesday, according to the Sacramento Police Department, which continues to investigate the crash.

All 11 occupants were seriously injured. Armstrong died at the scene, and the two children died at a hospital, police said. Eight other victims suffered injuries described by police as “serious or critical.”

The exact cause of the collision remains under investigation, but police in a news release said investigators believe speed was a contributing factor.

The involved, curving stretch of San Juan Road has a long history of crashes, resulting in at least one death and 35 injuries prior to last week’s tragedy, a Sacramento Bee analysis of state and local traffic data found.
