Several pedestrian bridges along Highway 99 in south Sacramento will shut down this summer for maintenance, according to a Caltrans statement.

Also known as a pedestrian overpass or overcrossing, the bridges between Broadway and Florin Road are designed solely for pedestrians to safely cross bustling roadways.

Starting next week, they’ll get a makeover.

The pedestrian overcrossings at Eighth Avenue, 27th Avenue and 35th Street will be shut down from Monday, June 19 to Sunday, July 30. The remaining bridges that connect 44th and 43rd avenues and Turnbridge Drive and Maynard Way will close from July 24 to Aug. 31.

The closures will allow crews to replace lighting and colored fencing chosen by nearby residents.

“Dates are subject to change but have been scheduled to minimize the impact to local schools,” Caltrans wrote in a statement.

What it means

Walkers and bikers will be shut off to the four overcrossings between Broadway and Florin Road.

What you should do

Shuttle service Universal Limousine and Transportation will transport pedestrians between 6 a.m. and 10 p.m. from one side of the closed crossing to the other.

Pedestrians should contact the transportation service at 916-361-5466 for a free ride.

What’s the project

The work is part of the $13.2 million Clean California Highway 99 project.

According to a statement from Caltrans, the project includes beautification and safety improvements such as painting and installing art panels along sound walls and slope paving bridges.

The project is expected to be finished next summer.
