Pedestrian fatality

A man was struck and killed on Highway 99 in south Sacramento, shutting down two lanes of traffic during Friday morning’s commute.

The incident happened just after 8 a.m. north of the Cosumnes River Boulevard on-ramp when a moving truck struck the pedestrian, according Officer Mark Leavitt, a spokesman for the California Highway Patrol’s South Sacramento office. According to the CHP’s incident log, the victim had been seen running across lanes on the northbound side before jumping the center divider and being struck in the two left southbound lanes.

Officers and paramedics arrived within minutes and found the victim unresponsive. The man was declared dead at the scene but no additional information about the victim was immediately available.

He will be identified by the Sacramento County Coroner’s Office once his family is notified.

The driver of the moving van remained on scene and was cooperative with officers, Leavitt said. Drugs or alcohol were not a factor in the crash, he said.
