County coroner seeks public’s help identifying man found dead in Sacramento River
The Sacramento County Coroner’s Office on Thursday asked for the public’s help in identifying a man whose body was found several weeks ago in the Sacramento River near Robert T. Matsui Waterfront Park.
The man’s body was first spotted about 5 p.m. on May 23 in the river near the 400 block of Jibboom Street, according to the Sacramento Police Department.
Authorities initially received a report of a body trapped under a boat in the Sacramento River, according to Capt. Justin Sylvia, a spokesman for the Sacramento Fire Department. He said a crew of Sacramento police officers were on a boat in the river, found the body and pulled it from the water.
The Police Department has said it was unclear whether the body found was that of a swimmer, a rafter or anyone else recreating in the river.
The man’s body was found fully clothed in a black “Mossy Oak” sweatshirt, a red T-shirt, black sweats, black athletic shorts, socks and one black glove on his left hand, county officials said Thursday in a news release.
County officials said his body was in a state of decomposition, and it appears he might have had short straight black or brown hair. He had a mustache, goatee and possibly beard or facial stubble of similar color.
His eye color and ethnicity were unknown. County coroner officials estimate he was 6 feet tall and weighed about 160 pounds. He had no discernible scars or marks about the body, but he did have a distinct red tribal-like tattoo on his right upper arm.
The cause and manner of death remained under investigation, as coroner officials await toxicology and other ancillary test results.
Officials asked anyone with information about the man’s identity to call the Sacramento County Coroner’s Office at 916-874-9320 or send an email to DeputyCoroner@saccounty.gov.
