Rio Linda barn blaze kills chickens and other livestock animals, fire officials report

A fast-moving fire in Rio Linda killed livestock and damaged an outbuilding Saturday before crews knocked down the blaze.

The fire sparked about 10:30 a.m. in an outbuilding in the 7900 block of El Verano Avenue, threatening horses and other animals, according to Sacramento Metropolitan Fire Department officials.

Firefighters quickly put down the blaze but a pig, goat and several chickens died in the flames. Horses inside the outbuilding were able to escape.

Metro Fire officials are investigating the cause of the blaze.
