Highway 49 in Auburn reopened after pedestrian struck and killed, police say
Highway 49 in Auburn is open after a pedestrian was killed in a traffic collision Tuesday night, the Auburn Police Department said.
Police closed a section of the roadway between Palm and Elm avenues after receiving a report about 8:20 p.m. that a pedestrian crossing the roadway was struck by a vehicle, police said.
Police arrived and began CPR on the victim, a 41-year-old man. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
The man crossed the highway outside of a crosswalk, police said. The motorist called 911 and remained at the scene, according to police, who said drugs and alcohol were not factors in the crash.
“Last night’s collision was tragic, but under most circumstances preventable by utilizing crosswalks,” said Lt. Tucker Huey in a news release. “On behalf of the men and women of the Auburn Police Department, I would like to extend our condolences to the victim’s family and friends.”
The identity of the victim will be released by the Placer County coroner.
