16-year-old girl dies in Sutter County crash after car rolls over into canal, CHP says

Roadway fatality

A 16-year-old girl died after her car went off a rural road Wednesday morning in Sutter County and overturned into a water-filled canal, the California Highway Patrol reported.

The fatal crash occurred about 7:30 a.m. on Clements Road, just north of Bogue Road, a few miles west of Yuba City.

The girl, a resident of Knights Landing in Yolo County, was driving a 2014 Chevrolet Camaro west on Bogue and approaching the 90-degree curve to Clements, the CHP Yuba-Sutter office said in a news release.

The teen driver was unable to safely make the right turn, and the car went off the west side of Clements. The CHP said the Camaro overturned into the canal.

A witness called 911 to report the crash. The teen was unable to get out of the car. The CHP said firefighters arrived at the scene and jumped into the canal to free the driver.

Several minutes later, the firefighters freed the girl, who was unresponsive, the CHP said. Firefighters began CPR on the driver. She was taken by ambulance to a hospital, where she was pronounced dead shorty after arrival, authorities said.

The CHP said it is not known whether drugs or alcohol were a factor in this collision. The Sutter County Coroner’s Office will release her name after her family has been notified.
