It’s no secret that Sacramento has a great coffee scene, and this year the capital city ranked 19th best coffee town in the nation, according to Wallethub’s 2023’s “Best Coffee Cities in America” report.

The consumer data looked at 100 of the nation’s most populated cities and compared coffee culture across 12 key metrics to determine the best.

San Francisco topped the list with a total of 62.41 points. Toledo, Ohio ranked last, but still made the top coffee city list with 22.43 points.

How is the ‘best’ coffee town determined?

The methodology for the report weighed 12 metrics on a 100-point scale. The city weighted average was considered using the overall score of each of the 12 points.

The following points were considered only for the city proper and not the outside neighborhoods of each city. Below are the 12 metric points that Wallethub considered when compiling their ranking for best coffee cities:

Average price per pack of coffee

Average price for a cappuccino

Average spending on coffee per each household

Adult coffee drinkers that consume “ready-to-drink” coffee at markets

Households with coffee makers

Affordable coffee shops

Cafes, coffee manufacturers, cafes with WiFi and doughnut shops per capita

Google traffic for coffee searches

Coffee-centric events in the city

An inside look at the numbers

Which city spends the most on coffee? Sacramento falls in the middle.

Sacramento placed 40th on the list when it came to how much residents spend on coffee per household. At the top of the list was Fremont, California. The city with residents spending the least on coffee is Hialeah, Florida.

The capital city does, however, have a wide range of cafes to choose from. It ranked 15th on the list when it came to coffee shops, coffee houses and cafes per capita. Orlando, Florida, ranked first with the most coffee shops per capita and Laredo, Texas, ranked last.

Overall, Sacramento placed 19 on the list with a total of 52.91 points.
