Sacramento man dies after crash with big rig carrying wide load in Sutter County, CHP says

Roadway fatality

A Sacramento man died in a head-on crash Tuesday evening after hitting a trailer attached to a big rig and crashing into a ditch, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The incident started with a 31-year-old Rio Oso man driving a Peterbilt truck carrying a wide load eastbound on West Riego Road, a news release from the CHP’s Yuba-Sutter office said. The Sutter County Sheriff’s Office responded first to the scene at 6:56 p.m. and called the CHP, which ultimately took over the investigation.

A trailer attached to the Peterbilt was partially in westbound lanes, and a Nissan driver struck an excavator on top of the trailer while heading west on West Riego Road, CHP officials said. A pilot car with flashing lights was driving in front of the Peterbilt, authorities said.

The Nissan driver, identified by the Sutter County Sheriff’s Office as 72-year-old Daljit Singh of Sacramento, crashed into a ditch and died.

The Peterbilt driver stopped after the crash and waited for authorities to arrive, according to the CHP news release.

Drugs and alcohol aren’t factors in the collision, but the officers are still investigating, the CHP said.
