Sacramento watering rules are about to change again. Here’s what you can (and can’t) do

California has been nearly drought-free since April, but residents in Sacramento are still being advised to limit the amount they water outdoor landscapes for the fall and winter.

According to the the city, residents and businesses need to follow a watering schedule starting Nov. 1.

“It’s important to remind people that the watering schedule exists, regardless of drought conditions,” William Granger, Sacramento’s water conservation coordinator, said in the news release.

For the fall and winter, watering is limited to one time per week, as plants need less water and rain helps water them as well, Granger said. Also, watering is not permitted for 48 hours after it rains more than one-eighth of an inch.

To help conserve water and make use of the anticipated rain in the winter, you can collect rain for your lawn and plants.

The city is offering 55-gallon rain barrels to residents for a discount. You can order up to two barrels for $49 each online, starting at 5 a.m. on Oct. 23.

What are the new rules this season?

From Nov. 1 to Feb. 28, residents and business owners can only water one day per week using sprinklers — either on Saturday or Sunday at any time of the day.

It is prohibited to water during the weekdays.

Exceptions to Sacramento watering schedule

There are a few exceptions to the rule, according to the city, including if you use drop irrigation or if you water with a hose and spray nozzle.

If you have a city-approved smart controller or if you’re watering potted plants, edible gardens or new landscaping that’s been installed within 30 days, you’re also exempt.

The rules don’t apply if there’s been two or more consecutive days above 100 degrees.

Fines for not following the watering rules

First violations will result in a written notice.

The second violation, if it’s within a year of the first one, is a $25 fine. But it can be waived if you participate in a water conservation program.

The third violation, within a year of the last one, is a $100 fine and the fourth violation is $500.

When does it end?

This watering rule ends Feb. 28, but starting March 1, there will be new rules for the season.

From March to Oct. 31, even-numbered addresses water on Wednesday and Sunday, and odd-numbered buildings water on Tuesday and Saturday.

And watering is only allowed before 10 a.m. and after 7 p.m.
