Sacramento City Councilman Eric Guerra’s re-election bid just got easier.

Amreet Sandhu, Guerra’s only challenger, has, in her own words, “discontinued” her run for personal reasons, she told The Sacramento Bee Monday.

Sandhu, previously an activist with the group Alliance of Californians for Community Empowerment, sought to move the council farther left.

There is still time for another serious challenger to file to run, as the deadline is Dec. 8.

Guerra was first elected to the council in 2015 and is now one of its longest serving members. He represents District 6 which includes Tahoe Park, Elmhurst and parts of southeast Sacramento.

Last year Guerra lost his bid for state Assembly to then-Elk Grove City Councilwoman Stephanie Nguyen. He announced earlier this year he would seek re-election to the council.

The primary will be held March 5. If no single candidate gets at least 50.01% of the vote, the general election for the 6th District would be held Nov. 5, 2024.
