Sacramento domestic violence center to close midtown boutique. What will take its place?
WEAVEWorks, a domestic violence nonprofit, will swap its retail operation for office space at one of its second-hand destinations in Sacramento.
After eight years of business, TRUE (Totally Recycled Urban Exchange) boutique on 1900 K St. in midtown will close on Nov. 1 to make room for community services, according to WEAVE. The Sacramento-based organization, founded in 1978 to support domestic violence survivors, noted the closure is due to a lack of store revenue.
“As we continue to evaluate our role as a comprehensive provider of survivor-centered services and a trusted leader in the movement to end violence, we’re also focusing on optimizing our resources, including our physical space,” WEAVE wrote in a statement to customers.
“Embracing this challenge, we see it as an opportunity to transform this space into something more impactful.”
Racks of jeans, shoes and belts will soon be swapped for workshops, employee trainings and meetings, weekend pop-up events and parking-lot sales.
TRUE’s upcoming closure comes less than six months after WEAVE was accused of upholding an unhealthy workplace environment by 13 of its former and current staff members. According to Sacramento Bee reporting, accusations included belittling diverse staff and being tone-deaf to conversations about race and racism.
Representatives from WEAVE were not available to comment on the upcoming closure.
WEAVE provides a variety of services to domestic violence victims including intervention services and education, a 24-hour support line, emergency shelters and transitional housing, legal aid and counseling. Its remaining second-hand stores — WEAVEWorks Recycled Fashion on Arden Way and The Thrift Store on Fruitridge Road — will continue to generate funds for WEAVE programs.
The boutique will have sales on its remaining items through October while simultaneously stocking inventory at its other retail locations around Sacramento. Then the midtown space will be morphed into a winter holiday toy store for the remainder of the year.
