When will massive Christmas tree light up Old Sacramento?

A 60-foot tall Christmas tree will light up historic Old Sacramento this week, just in time for Thanksgiving.

The 12,000-pound tapered white fir from Shasta County arrived at K Street between Front and Second streets in the historic waterfront district on Nov. 6, according to a news release.

Crews “artfully and meticulously” positioned the tree in place and decorated it with thousands of lights, icicles and strobes, the release said.

The roughly 40-year-old evergreen will be lit for the first time at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 22, during a formal lighting ceremony.

The 15th annual Theatre of Lights, which features free holiday performances throughout November and December, will put on its first show of the season after the tree is lit.

The tree will be lit purple on Sacramento Kings game days that don’t coincide with the Theatre of Lights performances.

Christmas tree shines at state Capitol

There’s also a Christmas tree on the west lawn of the state Capitol.

A roughly 60-foot-tall red fir was donated by the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection, also known as Cal Fire, and transported from Redding to downtown Sacramento in late October, according to a news release.

The tree features nearly 200 handmade ornaments donated by the California Department of Developmental Services, which provides services to people with disabilities.

Holiday decorations on the evergreen include 10,000 LED lights, officials said.
