Celebrity closeup: Actor and ‘Lady Bird’ director Greta Gerwig of Sacramento

Born and raised in Sacramento, California, actress, writer and movie director Greta Gerwig’s early dreams were of dancing in musical theater, but her parents suggested she study something more practical.

So, in college Gerwig majored in English and philosophy. She intended to get a degree in musical theater in New York, but ended up graduating from Barnard College

Gerwig is a St. Francis High School graduate.

Her widely acclaimed movie “Lady Bird,” set in Sacramento, won Best Motion Picture - Music or Comedy at the 75th Golden Globe Awards.
