Holiday shopping in Sacramento? Here’s when you can get free parking near local stores

Locals and visitors are getting the gift of free parking in downtown, midtown and Old Sacramento this holiday season, courtesy of the capital city.

Under the holiday parking program, which kicked off Friday and runs through Dec. 24, people can park for free at select street meters on weekdays after 4:30 p.m. and all day on weekends, according to a news release from the city.

This includes green meter payment machines, the city said.

“This holiday season, the city of Sacramento once again will adjust parking meter operating hours in specific areas to encourage residents and visitors to dine, shop and attend events in Old Sacramento, downtown and midtown,” the city said in the announcement.

All parking meters in the city are free all day on Christmas, Dec. 25, the city said.

Where can I park for free in Sacramento this holiday season?

The free holiday parking program only applies to select meters in a specified zone — starting from Front Street to the west, I Street to the north, 29th Street to the east and L Street or Capitol Avenue to the south.

When can I get free parking at meters?

Free holiday parking is only available at select meters on weekdays after 4:30 p.m. and all day on weekends, though Dec. 24.

The free parking applies only to meter payments.

“All other parking violations, such as street cleaning, time zones and color zones will still be enforceable as posted,” the city said.

If you’re unsure, the screen on the meter will let you know if parking is free or if you need to pay.

How long does the parking program last?

The free parking program runs through Christmas Eve, Dec. 24.
