Passenger killed, driver injured in two-vehicle Rio Linda crash, CHP North Sacramento says
A passenger was killed and a driver was taken to a hospital after both were involved in a two-vehicle collision Wednesday in Rio Linda, authorities said.
Sacramento Metropolitan Fire District firefighters went at 5:44 a.m. to West Sixth Street and Elkhorn Boulevard after a report of the crash, according to Battalion Chief Parker Wilbourn, a spokesman for the department.
A Ford pickup truck was making a left turn onto Highway 99 from a stop sign on West Sixth Street and Elkhorn Boulevard, said Officer Justin Fetterly, a spokesman for the California Highway Patrol’s North Sacramento office. The Ford struck the right side of a Honda Civic heading eastbound on Elkhorn, Fetterly said.
The Honda Civic’s passenger died, while the vehicle’s driver complained of pain and was taken to the hospital, Fetterly said.
The motorist killed was identified as 30-year-old Jose Martinez Herrera of Marysville, the Sacramento County Coroner’s Office said.
The pickup’s driver had no injuries. Drugs and alcohol didn’t play a role in the crash, the CHP said.
Coroner’s officials, however, indicated that Herrera’s death was criminal in nature.
