‘We all heard it.’ Loud noise startles Elk Grove residents; police investigate mystery boom

Police tape at crime scene

A loud boom Saturday night left people worried throughout Elk Grove, and police are working to determine what might have happened.

The unexpected noise startled residents around 10:30 p.m., Elk Grove Police Department spokesman Sgt. Jason Jimenez said. Officers canvassed the city but found nothing relevant.

“We all heard it, myself included,” Jimenez said. “Around 10:30, we received several calls and officers started checking the area. We were unable to locate the exact cause or location of the boom.”

Social media users reported hearing the boom on the west and east sides of Elk Grove alike and even south to Wilton. Jimenez compared the reaction to that following an earthquake when people discuss who “felt it.”

Elk Grove officials encourage anyone with information about the sound to call the department’s non-emergency line at 916-714-5115.
