Sacramento is kicking off the new year with rain. Here’s when — and how much could fall

The new year is getting off to a wet start in Sacramento.

According to the National Weather Service, rain will begin falling in the capital city on Tuesday afternoon and continue into Wednesday night.

There will also be moderate snowfall in the mountains, according to the weather service’s forecast.

Residents in the Tahoe region will see the heaviest snow starting Tuesday night through Wednesday afternoon.

Snow levels start around 5,000 to 6,000 feet and will lower to 3,500 to 4,500 feet on Wednesday, the NWS said.

What’s the weather forecast for Sacramento?

According to the National Weather Service, there’s a 30% chance of showers after 10 a.m. Tuesday, with rainfall totals between a tenth and a quarter of an inch.

Tuesday will be cloudy with a high near 57 degrees and winds of up to 10 mph, the agency said.

There’s a 100% chance of showers Tuesday night, with precipitation amounts between a half and three-quarters of an inch possible, the weather service said.

Temperatures are expected to dip near 47 degrees with gusts up to 25 mph.

Rain showers continue with a 70% chance on Wednesday, the weather service said, mainly before 10 a.m.

Wednesday will be cloudy, with highs near 54 degrees and wind gusts of up to 20 mph, the agency said. The low will be near 39 degrees.

According to the forecast, between a tenth and a quarter of an inch of rain is possible on Wednesday.

Calm weather is predicted to return on Thursday with a partly sunny skies, a high near 54 and a low near 39, the Weather Service said.

On Friday, there’s a 30% chance of showers before 4 p.m. and after 10 p.m., the agency said.

According to the weather service, there’s also a chance of showers on Saturday after 10 a.m. and before 10 p.m.

Highs and lows for Friday and Saturday will be around 52 and 40, respectively.

Sunday will be mostly sunny and clear with a high near 50 and a low near 33, the weather service said.
