Driver, 76, dies in Placer County I-80 crash after suffering medical emergency, CHP says

A 76-year-old Auburn man who was behind the wheel Tuesday died after suffering a medical emergency when his car drifted off Interstate 80 near Penryn in Placer County.

The California Highway Patrol’s Auburn office said the driver, who has not been identified, was driving with his wife when the medical emergency occurred. The driver’s wife called 911 after the incident, alerting officers to their location on eastbound I-80 at Rock Springs Road about 5:45 p.m., said Officer Yvette Norman, a spokesman for the CHP’s Auburn Office.

The passenger also complained of pain following the crash and was hospitalized, Norman said.

Their vehicle, a blue Toyota Camry, sustained moderate damage after the crash, Norman said.
