A person died after standing on train tracks in North Highlands Monday evening and being hit by a train, according to the Sacramento Metropolitan Fire District.

Firefighters went to Roseville and Walerga roads at about 5 p.m. for reports of a person hit by a train, said Battalion Chief Parker Wilbourn, a spokesman for Metro Fire.

Officials for Union Pacific, whose train was involved in the fatal incident, said they were working with local authorities to determine what happened, said Meg Ronspies, a Union Pacific spokesperson. Train crew members weren’t hurt in the incident, Ronspies wrote in an email.
