Woman killed in South Land Park hit-and-run crash. Sacramento police arrest suspect
Sacramento police arrested a man suspected of driving an SUV that fatally struck a woman riding a bicycle last week in the South Land Park neighborhood.
The deadly hit-and-run was initially reported shortly before 6 p.m. Jan. 9 as a traffic collision involving a vehicle that struck a pedestrian in the area of Freeport Boulevard and Potrero Way.
Officers arrived at the scene and found the woman who had suffered “significant injuries,” the Sacramento Police Department announced in a news release.
The woman was taken by ambulance to a hospital, where she was pronounced dead. The victim was identified by the Sacramento County Coroner’s Office as 56-year-old Mattie Nicholson of Sacramento.
Witnesses told officers at the scene the victim was riding a bicycle when she was struck by what investigators believe is a 2004 GMC Envoy SUV.
The department’s Major Collision Investigation Unit and crime scene investigators conducted a thorough canvass of the area for evidence and witnesses.
Officers closed Freeport Boulevard between Irvin Way and Wentworth Avenue to investigate the crash. The roads were reopened late that night.
Two days after photos of the GMC Envoy were released, the Police Department announced that investigators identified and arrested 64-year-old Antonio Jose Fragoso as the suspect in the South Land Park hit-and-run.
Fragoso was booked Friday evening at the Sacramento County Jail. He faces a felony charge of hit-and-run resulting in death, along with misdemeanor charges of vehicular manslaughter without gross negligence and driving with an invalid license, jail records show.
Fragoso remained in custody in lieu of $75,000 bail, and he appeared for his arraignment Wednesday afternoon in Sacramento Superior Court. He’s scheduled to return to court Jan. 24.
Investigators asked anyone with information about the fatal hit-and-run to call officers at 916-808-5471 or Sacramento Valley Crime Stoppers at 916-443-4357.
