Sacramento sports bar closed due to cockroaches. What else did health inspectors find?
Sacramento County health inspectors shut down a local sports bar this week after discovering several cockroaches.
Meanwhile, two other Sacramento-area restaurants received yellow placards.
A yellow placard signals two or more major violations, according to the Sacramento County Food Inspection Guide. These are typically corrected or mitigated during the inspection.
A red placard signals “imminent danger to public health and safety” and suspends the health permit until violations are corrected. This could include, but is not limited to, major vermin contamination.
In contrast, a green placard means a restaurant passed the inspection.
The county conducts roughly 14,000 inspections a year, and 97% of all restaurants pass their inspections, spokesman Ken Casparis previously told The Bee. About 1% of inspections result in a closure.
Last week, health inspectors did not shut down any restaurants in the Sacramento area.

Health inspectors close Sacramento sports bar
Chasers Sports Bar, 5412 Madison Ave. in Sacramento, seven violations on Wednesday. During the inspection, the dish machine was running without free chlorine. Inspectors found several adult German cockroaches on the floor beneath an a two-door beverage cooler, and four nymphs and two adult cockroaches on the floor beneath an empty ice bin that was by soda syrup boxes. The ice scooper was being stored directly on top of the ice machine during the inspection.
The Sacramento Bee reached out to Chaser’s Sports Bar, but had not received a response as of Friday morning.
Sacramento County restaurants get yellow placard violations
The following Sacramento County restaurants had violations the week of Jan. 11 through Jan. 17, resulting in a conditional pass.
Only the dates of violations are listed. Most restaurants fully pass reinspection within 72 hours. The reports are linked. For updates on individual restaurants, you can search the EMD website here.
Nash and Proper, 1023 K St. in Sacramento, had four violations on Tuesday. During the inspection, an employee was seen washing dishes without sanitizer, according to the inspection report. Inspectors found open bulk containers with food inside of them without proper “tight-fitting” lids. Chicken thighs were outside of required holding temperatures, and were voluntary discarded during the inspection, according to the report.
Fire Wings Fair Oaks, 5350 Sunrise Blvd. in Fair Oaks, had nine violations on Tuesday. A hand-washing sink was blocked during the inspection and had a water hose in front of it, according to the inspection report. Raw chicken in two large containers stored next to the deep fryers was not held at the proper holding temperatures, the report said. Inspectors saw an employee fail to wash his hands after handling a broom and other “non food items.” Inspectors also pointed out that the floors under equipment and throughout the facility were not clean. According to the report, there were debris and food on the floor.
