Nevada County Sheriff’s Search and Rescue team helps skier stuck in snow near Donner Summit
The Nevada County Sheriff’s Search and Rescue team, a group of volunteers, was already training nearby Saturday when they rescued a backcountry skier stuck in the snow in the Donner Summit area.
The volunteers were training in Johnson Canyon when they were called to help the woman, who had become separated from her skiing partner and had a ski equipment breakdown while touring around Donner Summit, the Search and Rescue team wrote in a Facebook post Monday.
The backcountry skier found herself unable to get out on her own in the deep, fresh powder, so the Search and Rescue team headed up to the summit and deployed a snowshoe team. They found the woman and her partner within a matter of minutes and escorted them to safety, according to the team.
“Luckily much of the crew was already geared up and ready to go, and the skier was found quickly by the snowshoe team and escorted to safety,” Nevada County sheriff’s officials said Monday in a Facebook post. “Another successful mission by our amazing team of volunteers.”
