A baby made a grand arrival into this world on Interstate 80 — helped by a California Highway Patrol officer.

Officer Katie Price assisted in guiding a mother through labor Saturday while on the side of Sacramento’s major freeway artery, as cars rushed by, the CHP’s North Sacramento office said in a social media post.

The mother and baby are doing well, the CHP said, showing a photo Price in the hospital with the beaming mother and newborn.

“Join us in happily welcoming one of the newest members of our community,” the CHP said, calling the incident “heroism on the highway.”

Price made history as one of the first recruits to go to work directly for the CHP’s North Sacramento office, CHP officials said in a 2023 social media post. Cadets who graduate from the CHP’s academy in West Sacramento are more often assigned to other area offices, based on department needs across the state, the agency says on its website.
